This is for a local Habitat for Humanity newsletter that is quarterly and will go to volunteers, donors and partners (churches/corporations). We have not done one for a few years and before, it was called the Beacon. I want something really catchy/clever and I’ve been really pulling ideas over the past few weeks and wanted to see what everyone else thought!

My friend runs a business in loans, real estate and auto leasing. He has asked me to help him in making monthly newsletters for his clients.

Now I just wanted to know what ideas you guys would have in including in the newsletter (other than info regarding loans, cars, and realty) that would give the client a less business-like feel to the newsletter.

For instance, we’re thinking of adding a part where we can list the names of clients whose birthdays fall during that months issue, maybe a quote of the day, a recipe, a true life story… I don’t know, that’s about the extent of it. I need help in thinking of other creative touches to put in a newsletter that doesnt want to be all-business but to make it more engaging for our clients by making it a little personal.

Any ideas? Thank you :)

Part of my job is creating templates and designing formats for business communications. I’ve been helping a colleague in Europe to develop a regional email newsletter that will be sent to several hundred employees. The purpose of the newsletter is to help employees feel more engaged, so it is a mix of articles on business topics (major initiatives, etc.) and personal topics (employee profiles, etc.). Her draft design used about 8 different colors, the layout was random and was very amateurish in appearance. I redesigned it to use just 2 alternating colors and tightened up the format so it looked more polished. She didn’t like it and wanted her rainbow of colors back. Her reasoning was we don’t want it to look so professional.

I have a REALLY hard time agreeing with that perspective and told her so, but I also couldn’t really articulate why I felt so strongly about it. What would you do? If you had a coworker or a customer say they didn’t want something to look so professional, what would you say to convince them otherwise?

To me, her approach looked sloppy, disorganized and was difficult to read. Other than telling her the blunt truth about the design, how could I have persuaded her to see that a clean, polished design is the better way to go?

Hi, I’m in the process of revamping a newsletter which needs updating and bringing to life. It is a financial newsletter which will cover technical issues from the accountancy sector, but will also contain news about client case studies and staff. Ideally looking for one word which is finance related but also signifies 360 degree news. Thanks

My school gives us a certain amount of bandwidth to use as we please, so I upload the (pdf) newsletter I do for work every month and send the link out in an email to everyone at work. My question is, how can I track the amount of hits I’m getting to the link?
I would like to have that information when I go to ask my boss to buy me a software program that would help me build and design the newsletter in an easier way.

Thanks for any help
