I wanted to see what kind of promotions they were sending to their customers. Is there anything illegal about doing that? I want to tell my boss, but I don’t want him to get mad at me over it.

if it is for research purposes you should tell your boss that you have been working on a project… if it is for personal use, don’t say anything! they could consider you disloyal and fire you. always CYA!

It is good business to keep tabs on the competition.

If it’s a public newsletter, it shouldn’t be a problem.
It it’s intended only for customers and vendors, it borders on being an ethical issue. Then I wouldn’t do it.

Not at all… It’s good business sense to keep an eye on what your competitors are doing.

That is no more illegal than reading something in the newspaper about your competitor. I admire your ethical concerns, though. Your competitor is offering the information to the public. You are the public.
