Linear form would be as in a page of a book. Continuous prose, each line scrolling from page left to page right, each segment following on further down the page from the last etc.
Block form would be like you see in a newspaper. Segments placed in boxes on the page, text in each box in columns no wider than a couple of inches, Irregular shaped blocks of text can be used to catch the eye etc.

Articles, instead of going from the left side of the page to the right side of the same page as this line shows,
should be
truncated
into columns.
